Popular Opera sets stage for Festival

By Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Committee · On April 11, 2015

Co-Opera’s new touring production of ‘Cosi fan tutte’ is set to be a popular drawcard of this year’s Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. Held in Penola’s Rymill Hall, the relaxed Cabaret event offers a fun night of entertainment in Co-Opera’s uniquely vivacious and irreverent style.

‘Cosi fan tutte’ was first performed in 1790 and roughly translates in English to “They all do it like that”. It is a beloved Mozart opera about testing the ties of love and tells the story of sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, who, abandoned by their fiances, deceived by poor disguises and flattered by ardent suitors, surrender to romances of convenience.

Mozart’s masterpiece of comedy in music is astonishingly contemporary and continues to engage and delight audiences with its witty insight into relationships and love. Co-Opera’s fine cast of established and emerging operatic artists artfully bring to life this irreverent and touching production, allowing the music to sparkle and the fun to run wild.

Co-Opera has been presenting operas to audiences in Penola for over twenty years, and it is always a much anticipated evening which coincides with the opening night of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival.

The John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize presentation will be held on Thursday May 21 in the Penola High School Hall, followed by Co-Opera at Penola’s Rymill Hall.

“Co-Opera has established a strong following in Penola over many years, so we are thrilled to have them presenting this comedic opera as part of our Festival this year,” said organiser Peter Muller.

“This year there will be a large cast including six singers, seven members of the orchestra, the conductor and three technical crew,” he said.

“The Co-Opera cast and crew love coming to this district, and it is the one region that they have visited continuously for more than twenty years, which is an excellent reflection on our audiences and community,” said Mr Muller.

The performance is sung in English except for the opera’s most famous aria Un Aura Amorosa [A Loving Aura] which is sung in Italian.

Guests are invited to BYO drinks and nibbles, and if they feel inclined are welcome to dress up in Black Tie, and all, to make it a night to remember. Tickets are available through the Penola Visitor Information Centre on (08) 8737 2855.
