BLUE FEET – NEW WORK BY CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATOR AND ARTIST, MARSHA WAJER

“Blue Feet” an exhibition by illustrator Marsha Wajer, showcases those gorgeous, goofy dancers…the Blue Footed Boobys. Why do they love to dance? Why do they show their feet off all the time? Marsha has created a delightful series around these (increasingly) rare and cute birds. It's full of fun, it's full of colour and has iguanas, octopuses and stripey hats included! “Moo and the Sleepy Secret” (illustrated by Marsha) will also be read aloud by the author (Catherine Clarke) out in the garden. Followed by a drawing demonstration where the kids can join in. Crayons and paper provided. CATHERINE MARTIN LITERARY AWARD

The Catherine Martin Literary Award is a competition open to budding young authors. This award is motivated by Australian Literature, and Australian themed writing, it is with this intent that participants were asked that their work be inspired by 'Australia', 'Australians' and 'Australian Life'. Local Judge Marg Muller and visiting authors Cass Moriarty & Pip Williams will oversee the judging of this award which is fast gaining a lot of interest. There will be monetary prizes for the winners and runners-up in the following categories: 10-12yo. 13-15yo. 16-18yo. Entries will be on display at the Penola Community Library. Please join the judges for the announcement of the award on Saturday 19th May at 3.00pm. Catherine Edith Macauley Martin (1848–1937) was an Australian novelist who published her work anonymously or under pseudonyms such as M. C., Mrs Alick MacLeod and Ishbel. Catherine migrated with her family to South Australia in 1855, settling in Robe and later in Naracoorte. In the course of her education she acquired a love of German language and literature and by the early 1870s she was helping her sister Mary to run a school at Elm Cottage, Crouch Street, Mount Gambier.

JAMES DARLING – JOURNAL WRITING WORKSHOP

“Journal writing: is it personal therapy, a tool for reference and research, a literary tradition or what? Bring your work and explore journal writing with artist, farmer and inveterate journal writer, James Darling”. This workshop aims to explore the 'how to' of personal journal writing as well as journal writing's place in literature. The workshop will explore the “how to” of personal journal writing as well as journal writing's place in literature. Hollick Estates and the Arts Festival are delighted to announce this year's Literary Brunch with award winning author Cass Moriarty. This will give readers, writers and eaters a chance to enjoy a light brunch together while talking books and literature in an informal, relaxed setting. Cass will be interviewed by journalist Katie Spain about her two award winning books 'The Promise Seed' and 'Parting Words' and the inspirations behind her literary work. Attendees are encouraged to read Cass's latest book as there will be opportunity for questions and reflections. Parting Words explores how well we know our loved ones, and the legacy we leave behind. Cass Moriarty writes movingly about family, friendship, love and relationships, exploring the themes of loyalty, loss, betrayal, guilt, redemption, grief and the importance of forgiveness. WRITERS’ FESTIVAL WITH MANAL YOUNUS

Manal Younus is a published young author who uses words and poetry to share stories and build connections with young people. Manal participated in the 2017 Arts Festival, running workshops during the weekend. She is back again this year, working with students from all three Penola schools to grow as storytellers, authors and creators of the spoken word! She will be a "writer in residence" in the week leading up to the festival. Her work with the students will be celebrated in the Park on Sunday, with a "Writer's Festival". Student's work will be on display as well as some live performances!
