SNUG AS A BUG: BUILD A BUG HOTEL COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION

A Bug Hotel provides a safe home, especially during winter, for the good insects in your garden. By encouraging good bugs in your garden you'll keep bad bugs under control, without needing to use any harmful pesticides or sprays. They also make beautiful garden art! Head into Koonara to collect your Bug Hotel materials and instruction sheet. Or you can assemble one from re-cycled, or up-cycled materials around your home. Maximum size: 1m x 1m. Entries must be delivered to Koonara by Friday 4 May 2018, 5pm. The winning entry will be awarded a $300 cash prize and all entries will be exhibited at Koonara over the Arts Festival weekend. On Saturday 19 May, 4pm we'll auction the top eight Bug Hotels to the public, with all funds raised going to the 2019 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival

CATHERINE MARTIN LITERARY AWARD

The Catherine Martin Literary Award is a competition open to budding young authors. This award is motivated by Australian Literature, and Australian themed writing, it is with this intent that participants were asked that their work be inspired by 'Australia', 'Australians' and 'Australian Life'. Local Judge Marg Muller and visiting authors Cass Moriarty & Pip Williams will oversee the judging of this award which is fast gaining a lot of interest. There will be monetary prizes for the winners and runners-up in the following categories: 10-12yo. 13-15yo. 16-18yo. Entries will be on display at the Penola Community Library. Please join the judges for the announcement of the award on Saturday 19th May at 3.00pm. Catherine Edith Macauley Martin (1848–1937) was an Australian novelist who published her work anonymously or under pseudonyms such as M. C., Mrs Alick MacLeod and Ishbel. Catherine migrated with her family to South Australia in 1855, settling in Robe and later in Naracoorte. In the course of her education she acquired a love of German language and literature and by the early 1870s she was helping her sister Mary to run a school at Elm Cottage, Crouch Street, Mount Gambier.

2018 ANNUAL PENOLA COONAWARRA ARTS FESTIVAL DESIGN PRIZE

An invitation is extended to celebrate creativity and excellence by designing a poster to be entered in the 2018 annual Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Design Prize. The chosen design will be used for all promotional material for the 2019 Arts Festival. The winner will receive $1000 sponsored by the Penola and District Business & Tourism Association.

THE BALNAVES FOUNDATION JOHN SHAW NEILSON ACQUISITIVE ART PRIZE AND LOCAL ART PRIZE

The John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize is named after the Penola born poet and sponsored by The Balnaves Foundation. The major Acquisitive Art Prize is $10,000 with local prizes to also be awarded. All previous winners are exhibited in the Penola Visitor Information Centre, Arthur Street. OFFICIAL FESTIVAL OPENING & WINNERS ANNOUNCED FROM 5.30PM ON THU MAY 17 2018.
